Salim Ali Bird Santuary – Thattekkad 

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary commonly known as Thattekkad bird sanctuary is situated at Thattekkad, near Bhoothathankettu of Kothamangalam.

Salim Ali bird sanctuary is located  12km  from Kothamangalam. Thattekkad means flat forest and which is evergreen lowland forest located between branches of Periyar. Salim Ali was one of the best ornithologists of India, he wrote about the richest bird habitat in peninsular India and his famous bird survey of Travancore in the 1930s.

Thattekadu is extremely rich in bird diversity that’s it made into a bird sanctuary, Its area includes 25.16 sqm.There are more than 300 species of birds here.Rainfall of 2500mm annually. Species includes Sri Lankan frogmouth, Malabar parakeet, white bellied blue flycatcher, Bronzed dragonets.It has plantations of teak, rosewood, mahogany and also nearly 28 species of mammals and 9 species of reptiles.

The Best time to visit Thattekkad is during the winter months from October to March. If you are planning your trip from January to March, you could see a lot of migratory birds from himalayas and other countries.

How to reach Thattekad/Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Kothamangalom is well connected by private buses to Ernakulam via Muvattupuzha. There are a lot of buses from Kothamangalam to Thatekad.The sanctuary is 13 km north –east of Kothamamgalam, the nearest railway station is Aluva at a distance of 48 km and 71 km from Kochi airport.
